Speedy Grampzales

No idea where this came from. Just messing around with shapes I guess. That and I think it would be fun to see what you could get away with when you're old.

gator skin progress

feels like I've been working on this forever but I've only been painting it for a week. And as that usually consists of one hour before work in the morning and then about twenty minutes before bed, that's really not that bad.

gator skin

Ok so this is pretty much what I am trying to illustrate here. A croc wearing the skin of a human as an ornament. A twisted parody of women who wear fur coats etc. I have no idea if it has been done before but this is really just an exercise in learning corel painter and the sketch will work fine for that. I know that the two drawing aren't marrying up too well at this point, the reason is that one was a rough sketch that I refined pretty much at that size, the woman's face started as a caricature of sharon stone and I just shrank it down to fit. This causes a few problems with regard to image and value intensity, also I've had to work the flayed skin so that it looks like a separate object from the crocodile. I will amend these issues when I take it into painter.

same ol gator

Only a little time to sketch this evening. The gator is pretty much done sketch wise but I still have to add the final flourish to the illustration. Actually its the final flourish that's the hard part. No reference for that. I included the reference I was working from here.

rip off gator

So I've been working trying to get this croc looking and standing the way I want it. I'm trying to get this sort of realistic looking croc with cartoony proportions making a face the would make wile e coyote proud and it's not working. There are lots of reasons why but the real problem is that I'm not sketching enough to knock out the crap in a timely fashion. And that's when a thought struck me. I'm not looking to reinvent the wheel here, I'm looking to learn some new techniques in corel painter. So I thought why not just continue the sketch I started of louis from the princess and the frog? I'm going to render it in a more realistic way than it is in the movie, I'm placing it in a unique environment and in all honesty, I love the way that disney does animals. So while its not as creative as coming up with my own crocodile creature, for the purposes of completing my course it works out just fine, and I am sketching it myself rather than just tracing over it so I don't feel so bad. Anyhow, progress is slow, but its still progress...
Ok, so its reeeeeallly slow. Don't judge me. I shifted over 420 boxes out of a building and into a truck yesterday, in stinking hot summer weather while wearing long pants and steel cap boots. You think I came rushing home bursting at the seams with anticipation for sketching? Well I didn't.

Third gator

This is much more the pose I am after but the arms and the hands/feet/paws (whatever gators use as their primary appendages) really bug me.

Gator gain

It's not working quite the way I want it to but it'll get there. It'll get there.

Gator

Not really sure where this one is heading to be perfectly frank. I'm trying to get the perfect amalgam of the classic disney gator and a real gator. Something that looks like it could take a decent sized chunk out of someone rather than something that looks like it would play a trumpet on a riverboat. Tricky stuff but I'll get there. Can only sketch it wrong for so long.

Slack Postings

Its been a busy weekend. Only done the one sketch of the crocodile from the princess and the frog though. Not that I've been slack, I've been busy learning Corel Painter. I sketched the caricature a few weeks ago and was working on painting it, the chicken is care of Ryan Wood. It's his painting in painter class that I am taking via schoolism.com and the santa painting is the finished product of a job I did for a christmas theme party next week. I did the sketch about two months ago and for the last week I have been using it as my first assignment for the painting in painter course. I kind of skipped his colouring process in order to get it to its final destination but I will knock it back to straight value for the remainder of the course. No hurry, it's self taught. The croc sketch is a sort of prelude to an idea that I am working on for the homework assignment for lesson 2. Will post more when I sketch more.

Ideas

I have some visual advertising ideas that I want to make up. Partly for fun and partly for portfolio. I do not like doing rough character design on the wacom tablet. I may have to break out the ol' red pencil and have a proper go at it.

Telephones

I'm not sure what I was hoping to achieve by forcing myself to do a sketch everyday, but you can rest assured it wasn't so that I could sketch out shitty looking telephones. I really need to decide what I'm going to sketch in advance. Also having a little less than 20 minutes is probably not such a good idea either.

16.11.10

Don't ask. I don't know. Seriously, I said that I was going to post whatever, regardless of quality but I really didn't expect to open up with something this bad. Oh well. Things can only get better.

Gerry Brownlee

Ok so new day, new week, new course and new blog. The goal is to sketch something every morning before work and get it posted here before I hit the sack. No rules, guidelines or outside pressures. Just sketch something and post it. Preferably something fun but I'll settle for something that I haven't sketched before. I will also be devoting a decent amount of time to sketching stuff from my head without reference. Those ones are going to suck. When I do use reference I will try and post it alongside the sketch.
Also I just signed up for the schoolism online painting in painter with ryan wood class. I'm trying out the self taught version because I'm not sure how work will interfere with the homework assignments.
Day one down. Onward to the next.
